A delightful family recipe for silky vanilla custard cream squares over a buttery crust, perfect for any occasion.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Fresh fruit for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine the flour, softened butter, and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar until crumbly.
  3. Press the dough into a greased baking pan and bake for 15 minutes.
  4. Simmer the whole milk, custard sugar, and egg yolks in a saucepan over low heat, whisking until thickened.
  5. Add the vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
  6. Pour the custard over the cooled crust and let set in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  7. Remove from the fridge and cut into squares.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar and garnish with fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Chill in the freezer for 30 minutes for faster setting.
