Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Icing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and yeast and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add melted butter, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Allow the Dough to Rise: Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Roll Out the Dough: Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface and spread with melted butter.
  6. Sprinkle the Cinnamon Sugar: Mix sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle generously over the buttered dough.
  7. Slice and Twist: Cut the dough into strips, twist each strip, and shape as desired.
  8. Second Rise: Place on a baking sheet and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Brush with Egg Wash: Brush twists with egg wash for a golden sheen.
  11. Bake the Twists: Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Drizzle with Icing: Once cooled, drizzle with icing if desired.

Notes

For extra cinnamon flavor, try adding nutmeg or cardamom to the sugar mix. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
