A creamy and nostalgic dessert made with layers of ripe bananas, vanilla pudding, and wafers.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • Whipped cream (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Whisk the base ingredients in a saucepan together the milk, sugar, flour, and salt.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens and bubbles.
  3. Prepare the egg yolks in a separate bowl by whisking until well combined.
  4. Temper the egg yolks by slowly adding some of the hot mixture and then pouring it back into the saucepan.
  5. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, then stir in the butter and vanilla.
  6. Layer the vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and pudding in a serving dish.
  7. Top with whipped cream before serving.

Notes

Whisk the mixture diligently while heating to avoid lumps. For variations, try adding nuts, using different cookies, or experimenting with flavors.
