  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1/4 cup poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Powdered sugar for glaze (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add melted butter, egg, sugar, lemon zest, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix well until combined.
  3. Knead the Dough: Gradually add flour and knead until smooth.
  4. Let the Dough Rise: Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled.
  5. Prepare the Filling: Roll out the dough, spread with poppy seeds and lemon juice, and roll into a log.
  6. Slice the Rolls: Cut the rolled dough into slices and place on a baking sheet.
  7. Second Rise: Let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat and Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Glaze for Extra Sweetness: Drizzle with powdered sugar glaze before serving.
