A delightful blend of sweet and savory, this Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole features layers of fluffy bread, savory meats, and gooey Swiss cheese encased in a creamy custard, perfect for brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 8 slices beef deli meat (e.g., roasted beef)
  • 8 slices turkey deli meat
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Raspberry jam or preserves, warmed (optional)
  • Additional pure maple syrup, for drizzling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Generously grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with melted butter.
  2. Arrange 4 slices of bread in a single layer in the bottom of the dish.
  3. Layer with 4 slices of beef deli meat, followed by 4 slices of turkey deli meat, and half of the Swiss cheese.
  4. Top with the remaining bread slices, then layer on the remaining deli meats and cheese.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, salt, and pepper until well blended.
  6. Pour the egg mixture over the layered casserole, pressing down gently.
  7. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and let the casserole sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  9. Bake covered with foil for 35 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool for 10 minutes before slicing and dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Make this a day ahead for enhanced flavor. Experiment with different cheeses or make a vegetarian version with grilled vegetables.
